Biblical Human Sexuality: A Word on Canada’s Denial of God
My name is Deji Yesufu. I am a missionary to the city of Ibadan in Nigeria, West Africa. I am endeavoring to plant a Reformed Baptist Church in this city – the first of its kind in this place. I have hereby joined a number of pastors in the West to speak on “Biblical Human Sexuality” on this Lord’s Day, 16th January, 2022. I trust God to bless the preaching of his word as I read it. Amen.
On the 29th of November, 2021, the lower house of the Canadian parliament passed a bill called “Bill C-4”. On the 7th of January, 2022, this bill was passed into law by the Canadian government. This bill, now law, effectively criminalizes the concept of conversion therapy. To understand what this bill stand for, we will have to look at the preamble to the whole document. It reads: “…conversion therapy causes harm to society because, among other things, it is based on and propagates myths and stereotypes about sexual orientations, gender identity and gender expression, including the myth that heterosexuality, cisgender gender identity, and gender expression that conforms to the sex assigned to a person at birth are to be preferred over other sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expression; … and in light of those harms, it is important to discourage and denounce the provision of conversion therapy in order to protect human dignity and equality of all Canadians…”
Conversion therapy may encompass all effort at changing the mind of anyone on any issue – which will include evangelism – but the context of this bill makes it clear that the matter the bill frowns against are any effort at changing people’s minds about their sexuality and now that the bill has been passed into law, it is effectively a crime to try to counsel, persuade, preach at or promote efforts at changing people’s minds about sexualities other than heterosexual relationships. Canada is saying that any effort at changing people’s minds about being gay or belonging to the LGBTQ community is now a crime. This is a law that targets evangelistic efforts of Christians and thus a law against God.
How Did we Get Here?
The Western world led progressive efforts at changing our world in the past three hundred years. From various scientific discoveries to the industrial revolution that brought much wealth upon these nations, the idea of man being all sufficient and not needing God has continued to gain increased acceptance in the nations. Thus begun a rise in humanistic thinking, which is essential atheistic, and which denounces every mention of God, religion or so called revelation. The Bible, which once was the foundational worldview of Western societies, was thrown out as antediluvian and stories written in scripture were regarded as myths. Thus fulfilling the words of the Holy Bible that when men refuse to keep a knowledge of God in their hearts, “… God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.” (Romans 1:16-17). When men refuse the knowledge of God, God gives them up to vile affections. The leading one of which is homosexuality and lesbianism. This is how we got to where we are.
What is the biblical position on human sexuality?
The Bible recognizes human sexuality as binary: male and female. Genesis 1:27-28: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” Two things can be gleaned from this scripture: God created human beings as male and female: binary. Not as lesbians, gays, bi-sexual, transgender, or any of the hundred other sexual orientations out there in the world. God made them male and female. And proof of this is in the fact that only male and female can procreate. It does not matter the advancement that science has made, that which God has set into nature, which reflects God’s person, glory and laws, is that only in the union of a man and a woman can procreation occur. So if the nations reject the law of God and say they regard heterosexuality as a myth, they must however come to terms with the laws of nature that shows that only male and female can make children. The efforts of gay couples to have children have not only been proven to be impossible, it has also revealed the foolishness of modern men and their rejection of God. In the beginning, God made them male and female – this is the biblical position on human sexuality and the fact that only male and female can procreate is proof that the Bible is right; the holy Writ are not myth; and the nation of Canada must reconsider its position in her new laws that denounces conversion therapy.
What are the implications of this law on Canada and on the nations of the earth?
It is no longer a secret that most of the nations in the Western world have taken up a leftist position on issues. The left repudiates everything conservative and aims at formulating progressive ideas and policies. They do this forgetting that while progressivism may be good in itself, it must be founded on some conservative ideologies. Canada herself, once a Christian nation, states in the preamble to her Constitution Act of 1982 that “…Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law.” This is a statement made, not some three hundred years ago, but exactly forty years ago. It means that even recent thinkers in Canadian political life recognize God as foundational to the life of their country. They also recognize that the rule of law is important for the proper running of society. These men saw, however, that God precedes the rule of law and it is safe to say that there is no law Canada will enact which should be repudiating to the Holy God of scripture. Unfortunately, the bill C-4, which today is law in Canada, repudiates the following laws of God as stated in the Holy Bible. The Bible says:
Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill. 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” This scripture is gleaned from the ten commandments. It is from this scripture that the laws of all lands get the idea that a man cannot just murder another without the due process of the courts of law. It is also from here that we get the idea of the sacredness of human possession: no one has the right to transcend the boundaries of another and take for himself what does not belong to him. Alas, it here we see the sacredness of marriage and the reason why a man or a woman must not sleep with the spouse of another. These are God’s holy laws and these are the conservative worldview that Canadian law makers once recognized when they said that Canada is founded on principles that recognize the supremacy of God. Furthermore, scripture teaches:
Leviticus 18:20 “ thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor’s wife, to defile thyself with her. 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. 18:23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.” This Leviticus scripture help shed light on the commandment “thou shall not commit adultery”. It shows further that all kinds of sins, that include homosexuality and bestiality, are forbidden by God. It calls homosexuality an abomination and it calls bestiality confusion. Unfortunately, such abominations and confusions have become the norm or the law in Canada.
The New Testament is also not silent on these issues. Paul the apostle taught: 1 Corinthians 6:9 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 6:10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortions, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” The “effeminate” and “abusers of mankind” as mentioned above are homosexuals of today. Paul said such people will not inherit God’s kingdom. In the words of Nigeria’s latest internet sensation, our own Mummy G.O, such people are going to hell. There is no such thing as a gay Christian. As many as practice this evil or have sympathy for it will be heading to an eternity without God and without his Christ.
Therefore, the implications of bill C-4 is that Canada is today a godless nation. It is a country no longer founded on principles that recognizes God and his supremacy and it is a country that will only go from bad to worse – increasing in godlessness daily. It also means that other leftist nations will soon imitate Canada’s godlessness and inaugurate laws like those of Bill C-4. The LGBTQ communities will no longer be fringe groups but are soon becoming the mainstream of modern societies. People cannot be voted for without pandering to the evil desires of these godless people. The very story of Sodom and Gomorrah, which Canada today regard as myth, will play out in our world in the near future. Such that God’s wrath and anger will soon be visited on the nations of the world. If we have never believed in an apocalyptic end to our world, Bill C-4 has introduced it to us. The Bible says: Psalms 9:15 “The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. 9:16 The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
Why does this concern us in Nigeria?
Nigerians ought to know about this matter because we are a nation that is not original; we tend to copy western values and ideas, and think that our own beliefs and traditions are not modern – and thus must be discarded with. In Nigeria today homosexuality is illegal. Yet, because our country is very dependent on the Western world for survival, we soft pedal at enforcing these laws. The implication is that there is a rise in the number of professing homosexuals in our country. The LGBTQ community here is on the increase. Celebrities like Bobrisky and James Brown are fast becoming role models to our young people. I witnessed how America began to accept gay lifestyle into its national life in the 1990s. I saw how TV shows Sally Jessy Raphael spent all their time giving airtime to gays. In less than 30 years the LGBTQ community, which was once a fringe group in the USA, have become the mainstream. While evangelcalism, which was once the mainstream, are a derided fringe group in that country. Nigeria is today in the 1990s of America. If we do not do what we ought; if we will allow these continual rush to live in Canada get into the life of our people – Nigeria will soon repeal her laws against homosexuality and gays will soon begin to rule this country – as they are doing in Canada today.
Conclusion
Today, 16th of January, 2022, more than three thousand pastors in America and Canada are preaching this message on “Biblical Human Sexuality”. I join my brethren in the West to denounce this evil. I heard about this wholesale preaching endeavor from Dr. James White. I gleaned heavily from Dr. Tony Costa’s YouTube video on the subject to write this sermon. And I’m happy to preaching with John MacArthur today on this subject. Christians believe in a separation between state and church. We believe that the business of governance is the job of politicians. We however hold that government is subordinate to God and since we preach the gospel and the laws of God, we use our pulpits today to call politicians in Canada to order. Repent this day of the evil of Bill C-4; repeal this law; believe the gospel; and you will be saved.
For this reason was the son of God manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil. Homosexuality and all of its evil concomitants are the works of the devil. Those who are gays will spend eternity in hell. Homosexuality is a sin. Jesus Christ died and rose again to redeem all homosexuals from the sins of their ways. Believe the gospel and you will be saved from the wrath of God coming on the face of the earth.
In 1662, the great ejection occurred in England. 2,500 Puritan pastors left their pulpits and were ejected from their churches because they refused to conform to the state that demanded that they must use the Book of Common Prayers of the Church England in their worship services. These great men, who are our forbears in the faith, told the world that they would rather die obeying God than bowing to Caesar and his laws: particularly when Caesar enunciate laws that goes against God’s laws. The men ejected includes greats like John Owen, Richard Baxter, Edmund Calamy the Elder, Simeon Ashe, Thomas Case, John Flavel, William Jenkyn, Joseph Caryl, Benjamin Needler, Thomas Brooks, Thomas Manton, William Sclater, Thomas Doolittle and Thomas Watson. Many of them suffered afterwards and died in ignominy. Most were buried unceremoniously outside London. Their testimony of faith however remains with us till today. It is the reason why pastors in Canada have defied COVID-19 lockdown measures. It is also the reason why we must tell lawmakers in Canada that this law, criminalizing conversion therapy, is a law against God. Whatever will happen after today we leave to God. We must however tell you straight away that homosexuality is sin and the nation of Canada must repent of this sin and believe the gospel.
